Bolpur: Police in Birbhum district have arrested a man with a cache of explosives. He is now being interrogated to ascertain the purpose for which he had procured the explosives.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Mohammad Bazar police station raided Rampur village in Nalhati block last night. The team zeroed down on the house of Barik Momin, a middle-aged man, and found as many as 193 gelatin sticks and 300-odd detonators.
Momin was arrested at once. He was produced in the Suri district court today and the judge sent him to police custody.
In preliminary interrogation, the man has claimed that he had procured the explosives for illegal mining in the stone quarries that dot the Birbhum-Jharkhand border areas. But police are not buying this on face value as with the onset of monsoon, mining ~ both legal and illegal ~ are now suspended.
The suspicion is that the explosives could have been meant for the Maoist insurgents in the forested areas of Jharkhand bordering Birbhum.
