Bolpur: A middle-aged man today died of bullet injuries in an attack, allegedly carried out by Trinamool cadres on a BJP rally, at Suri in Birbhum.
This happened on a day widespread political violence was reported from various places in Bengal during the filing of nominations for the Panchayat polls on an extended deadline. Interestingly, Trinamool has claimed that the deceased man was their supporter.
According to Birbhum BJP leader Surajit Ghosh, several BJP candidates, accompanied by party workers, were today going to the Suri-I BDO office in a rally to file nominations for the Panchayat polls.
A group of armed Trinamool cadres launched an attack on them at Karidhya village by firing bullets and lobbing crude bombs. Three BJP workers were hit by the bullets. One of them, Dilwar Sheikh died on the spot; the two others are now admitted to the Suri District Hospital.
However, state municipal affairs minister and Trinamool Bibhum in-charge Firhad Hakim claimed to reporters in Kolkata that deceased Sheikh was a Trinamool supporter and he has been killed by BJP men.
