Diamond Harbour: A middle-aged man today surrendered to police in South 24-Parganas district after having murdered a woman with whom he was into a live-in relationship for the last five years.
The incident has taken place at Subhasgram under Sonarpur police station jurisdiction. Around 8 in the morning, Sanyashi Das (44) walked into Sonarpur police station and told the cops that he has murdered his partner Manju Halder (30).
A police team at once rushed to the hutment at Subhasgram’s Dhanmath area where the couple lived on rent and found Manju’s bloodstained body lying on the floor. Sanyasi had killed her by slitting her throat with a knife. Police found the knife in the one-room hutment.
Sanyasi, who is a rickshaw-van puller by profession, was arrested at once. Later in the day, he was produced at Baruipur Sub-divisional Court and the court remanded him in police custody.
Preliminary investigation has revealed the murdered woman was originally a resident of Jadavpur area. Manju used to work as a domestic help and had abandoned her husband over some family feud. She then entered into a live-in with Sanyaschi at the Subhasgram hutment for nearly five years now.
However, with Sanyashi of late often coming home drunk and physically assaulting her on one pretext or the other, Manju was trying to get away from him. She had even contacted her estranged husband for reconciliation.
Police suspect that Sanyashi got a wind of this and murdered her out of anger. Sanyasi has not yet disclosed to police anything about the motive behind killing the woman whom he stayed with for so many years.
