Howrah, 25 September: POLICE in Howrah’s Uluberia have exhumed the skeleton of an eight year girl who had been missing since 25 August. A 40-year old male neighbour arrested by police said that the girl died after he had slapped her for pestering for chocolate.
The victim girl has been identified as Rejina Khatun, daughter of Bapi Seikh, a resident of Bahadurpur village in Uluberia.
Bapi had lodged a complaint with police on 26 August stating that his neighbour Moslem Kha had taken Rejina with him to a fishing exercise in the village and she did not return ever since. Following the complaint, Moslem fled the village while his wife Ajmira pleaded ignorance when questioned by cops.
After he went absconding for about a month, the police succeeded to arrest Moselm on 20 September. During questioning, he told cops that after returning to his home from the fishing exercise on 25 August, Rejina was constantly pestering him for chocolates.
At one point losing his cool, he slapped the girl hard and she died a few minutes later as she had suffered injury near her left ear. To suppress the incident, Moselm then buried the girl’s body beside a pond nearby his house. His wife Ajmira was a witness to the entire episode.
On Thursday, Moselm and Ajmira showed police the spot where they had buried Rejina. Police dug up the site and found the child’s bones and the plastic slipper that Regina was wearing when she had gone out with Moselm.
Following the recovery, Ajmira too was arrested for her complicity in the crime. Police are further interrogating the couple to verify their version of Rejina’s death as the girl’s family believe that Moselm had murdered the girl after violating her.
