Kolkata: DIEGO Maradona, fondly called the God of Football by fans, has found a permanent place in Kolkata in whose heart he has been ever since the 1986 World Cup win!

Salt Lake Stadium in the city will soon boast of a 12-feet tall bronze statue of Maradona. He himself today unveiled the statue at Sreebhumi Sporting Club off Ultadanga.

The Argentine start arrived in Kolkata last night on an invitation, his second visit to the soccer frenzy city. He had visited Kolkata the first time in 2008 at the initiative of late Left Front sports minister Subhash Chakraborty.

Accompanied by girlfriend Rocío Oliva, Maradona took to the stage at Sreebhumi Sporting Club dais today afternoon amidst the cheers by thousands of fans who assembled from different parts of Kolkata and the suburbs.

Trinamool MLA Sujit Bose, who is the main patron of Sreebhumi Sporting Club, greeted him with a Bengali shawl. Soon after this, dressed in a black tracksuit with a red vermillion mark on the forehead, Maradona shot two footballs at the fans with his famous left foot.

After this, he unveiled his bronze statue that themed on the 1986 World Cup Football victory. Sports commentator Boria Majumdar, who anchored the event, said that the statue will soon find its rightful place at the VIP gallery of Salt Lake stadium thus giving the God of Football a permanent place in Kolkata.
