Kolkata: West Bengal Medical Council has suspended the registration of two doctors attached to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata for the negligence in treatment of Sanjay Roy of Dankuni, who died last year.

The Council today said that while the registration of radiologist Usha Goenkaha has been suspended for one year, the registration of surgeon Shyamal Sarkar has been revoked for six months.

The move comes after a state health department instituted probe found them guilty of medical negligence, and Apollo Hospitals guilty of over-billing, etc.

Roy (30) of Dankuni on the northern fringes of Kolkata was admitted to Apollo Hospitals Kolkata on 16 February 2017 following a motorbike accident. He remained hospitalised for eight days with little improvement and died at SSKM Hospital in the city on 24 February after his family moved him there due to high cost of treatment at Apollo.

Roy’s death and the high amount of bill raised by Apollo Hospitals raised a hue and cry in Kolkata. His wife lodged an FIR against the private hospital and also moved a petition to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanding a probe.

The state health department subsequently instituted a probe by experts and the hospital was indicted for medical negligence and over-billing.
