Asansol, 06 May: TWO workers have died and four have been critically injured after melted iron fell on them at the Central-PSU IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur in West Burdwan district.

The accident took place around 5 today morning at IISCO’s continuous casting plant (CCP) when the workers were at the fag end of their night shift. Melted iron was being carried using an automated lifter from one part of the plant to another part and the workers were performing their duties below.

During this, the melted iron somehow spilled onto the workers, killing two on the spot and injuring seven. The deceased have been identified as Snawar Sheikh (29) and Asish Sikka (30), both engaged as contract labourers.

The injured were rushed to a private nursing home at Durgapur. Doctors discharged three of them on first-aid, but the rest four were admitted as they have suffered over 90 per cent burns.

Following the accident, other workers brought operations at the CCP plant to a halt demanding adequate safety arrangements for all workers.
