Kolkata: A middle-aged couple has been found dead in a multi-storied residential building in Kolkata’s Salt Lake.

It is suspected that the husband killed his wife and then hanged himself. Police have found a suicide note in their flat that speaks of financial hardships and corresponding depression.

The deceased have been identified as Ranjit Das and Mamata Das. They lived in a third-floor flat of a four-storied building named ‘Sen Villa’ located at Salt Lake’s Santinagar. They had bought the flat some four years ago.

The couple had two daughters, who were married off a few years ago and, one adult son.

Das used to run a jewellery store at Beliaghata in the city but had to sell it off to meet the expenses for treatment of their son, who is mentally unsound.

According to their neighbours, the couple was very depressed for the past few months as they were unable to meet the treatment cost any more.

The expenses incurred in the treatment of their son had severely dented the family’s financial health.

“Around noon today, their son knocked on my door saying that his father has hanged himself and mother was sleeping. Given his mental status, I initially doubted what he was saying but on peeping through the door found Ranjit-da hanging from the ceiling fan, while his wife was lying dead on a bed below,” said neighbour Dipen Biswas.

He informed Bidhannagar South police station. A team of policemen came and sent the dead bodies for post-mortem. Biswas said that akin to newly married woman Mamata had vermillion applied on her forehead and lac-dye (Alta) on her foot.

Police later found a suicide note in the flat wherein Ranjit has apologised to his two daughters saying that he could not withstand the financial constraints anymore.

He has also asked the daughters to sell off the flat and divide the money among themselves. As regards their mentally retarded brother, he should be abandoned on the streets, the note reads.

Police said that the couple had run into huge debts and were even finding it difficult to maintain daily family expenses. But whether Ranjit killed his wife and then hanged himself can be ascertained only after getting the post-mortem reports, police added.
