Kolkata: A middle-aged woman and her elderly mother have been charred to death following a fire in their flat at Mall Road in Dum Dum.
The mishap took place today afternoon and the deceased have been identified as Swati Mukherjee (53) and Dipti Mukherjee (75). No other person was in the flat at the time.
Around 5 in the afternoon, occupants of other flats at Mall Enclave apartment saw smoke billowing out from flat No 103 owned by the Mukherjees. Despite shouting out repeatedly, when they did not get a response from the flat, the neighbours called up the fire brigade.
Two fire tenders rushed in and the firefighters entered the flat on fire by breaking the latch of the main door. On stepping inside they found Swati and Dipti lying charred in a room. An LPG cylinder was found in the room with the nob kept open and this was feeding the fire.
It took the firefighters about an hour to douse the fire and retrieve the dead bodies of the mother-daughter duo. The bodies were sent to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Subrata Mukherjee (56), the husband of deceased Swati Mukherjee was reportedly away in office when the fire broke out. He rushed in on being informed by the neighbours. Police are questioning him for clues to the mishap as the investigators suspect it to be a cause of suicide by his wife and mother-in-law.
