Kolkata: In a bid to overtake a bus of the same route, a minibus has ended up killing one person and grievously injuring seven others near Acropolis Mall at Kasba in south-east Kolkata.
The mishap occurred around 10.30 am and the victim has been identified as Biswanath Halder (50), a resident of China Mandir locality at Chowbaga off EM Bypass. The driver and conductor of the killer minibus have escaped.
Eyewitnesses have told that the Anandapur-Howrah minibus was speeding down the Rashbehari Connector and was trying to overtake a bus heading towards the same direction.
In the course of this, the driver lost control over the minibus in front of Kasba New Market (opposite to Acropolis Mall). Following this, the minibus first rammed into two auto-rickshaws that were waiting by the road to take passengers and then dashed onto a Mercedes car parked by the road.
Both the auto-rickshaws got completely mangled; rear of the Mercedes got twisted. There were several people either waiting in the auto-rickshaws or on the road to catch the bus. Eight of them suffered critical injuries in the mishap while an on-duty traffic sergeant escaped luckily.
The injured were rushed to a private nursing home on EM Bypass where 50-year-old Biswanath Halder was declared dead on arrival. The seven other injured have been referred to the MR Bangur Hospital at Tollygunge. The condition of one of them is critical.
The driver and conductor of the killer minibus manage an escape but police have confiscated the killer minibus.
