Siliguri, 10 October: SOME unidentified miscreants have vandalised a Durga Puja pandal at North Bengal University main campus at Shiv Mandir in Siliguri.

Teaching and non-teaching staff of the university living in the residential quarters on the campus have been organising this puja for several years now.

Today early morning when some of them came to pandal to make preparations for Maha Navami puja, they found that interior of the pandal has been vandalised and the heads of Kartik, Laxmi, and Saraswati idols had been decapitated. Following the discovery, Navami puja had to be called off.

Staff members associated with the puja said that a group of unruly people from the neighbourhood of the varsity campus had demanded very high amount donation for a Durga Puja outside the campus. But the demand was turned down on the logic that a community puja is organised by the residential staff within the campus itself.

They suspect that angry over this, people from that group might have vandalised the pandal. However, what has come as a surprise is that private security guards are supposed to stay guard on all entry gates to the university campus, including the one located at the backside where the pandal had been erected.

With the incident triggering tension and anger among the people on campus, a police team from Matigara police station rushed in and registered an FIR. A police team has been deployed at the site to prevent any escalation. Cops said they were trying to identify the culprits and arrest them at the earliest.
