Kolkata, 25 February: THE Railway Budget 2016 presented by Suresh Prabhu in Parliament has a mixed bag for West Bengal.
The Bengal specific projects that have found place in the Railway Budget include 12 road-over-bridges (ROB) that will replace existing level crossings, a new rail line, doubling of an existing rail line, and a new Metro route in Kolkata.
But as it obvious, for those in Kolkata, the announcement for a new Metro route is the most prized ones among all the projects announced. The 05.5 km new Metro route will run from the Central Park Metro station in Salt Lake to Haldiram on VIP Road. The project cost for this has been estimated at Rs 674.50 crore and only one lakh rupees has been allocated for this in the 2016-17 budget.
This will be a new arm of the under-construction East-West Metro Corridor that runs from Salt Lake Sector-V to Howrah Maidan. The railways minister announced that the first phase of the East-West Metro, that is, from Sector-V to Sealdah, would get completed by June 2018. This was originally scheduled to be made operational by 2014.
In his speech, Prabhu mentioned that about 100 km of Metro works were presently underway as against the existing north-south Metro that runs a little over 25 km. But other than the East-West Metro Corridor, the minister did not made a reference to the rest of the Metro extension projects.
Next comes two new dedicated freight corridors ~ from Kharagpur (West Midnapore district) to Mumbai, and Kharagpur to Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. The two projects will be implemented in PPP mode.
NEW RAIL LINE:
The new rail line that has been proposed is a three km one from Haldibari – to the International Border with Bangladesh.
DOUBLING OF RAIL LINE:
The 51.65 km remaining portion of the New Maynaguri (Jalpaiguri district) to Gumanihat (Cooch Behar district).
