Bolpur, 15 January: AN irate mob today attacked Mayureswar police station in Birbhum, set fire to a room and two police vehicles after a youth was run over by a sand carrying truck at some distance.

The truck involved in the accident has also been torched.

The attack, which took place around 11 am, was so ferocious in nature that the on-duty policemen, including the officer in-charge of the police station, Rakesh Sadhukhan, fled to save themselves from the irate mob.

Trouble broke out after Seikh Sazu, a young mason from the locality, was mowed down by the speeding sand carrying truck at Majhipara area. He died on the spot.

Local residents alleged that the police regularly extort money from the trucks that carry sand from Mayurakshi river and the accident took place today while the truck driver was trying to speedway to evade paying the bribe.

Peeved at this, residents resorted to a road blockade at the accident spot by placing the dead body on the road. A team of cops from Mayureswar police station went to the site, tried to lift the blockade and take away the body for post-mortem.

This led to a commission between the local residents and the police. In no time, the residents turned violent and began attacking the police.

With more people joining in, the mob then raided the Mayureswar police station, and first set on fire two police vehicles that were parked on the premises. They then began stone / brick pelting at the police station building and set fire to the generator room.

Outnumbered by the mob, the cops who were present at the police station fled and took shelter at a barrack located nearby. They remained cooped up there until reinforcement came from Suri police station and brought the situation under control.

Police are now scanning the footage of the CCTV cameras installed at the police station and have launched a manhunt at Majhi Para and Muslim Para looking for the people involved in the violence.
