Diamond Harbour: Villagers have lynched a middle-aged man in South 24-Parganas district after he allegedly burgled the house of a relative.
The burglary took place late on Tuesday night, while the lynching has taken place today. The deceased has been identified as Zakir Koyal, who was in his 40’s.
The incident has taken place at Gunjirpur village under Mathurapur police station jurisdiction.
According to Abed Koyal, he was alone at home on Tuesday as his family members went on a visit to a relative’s house.
Around midnight, a gang of two robbers burgled into his house and, one of them trained a sharp weapon at his neck.
The other took out Rs 1.86-lakh cash that was kept in a wardrobe. But as they were about to flee, Abed saw their faces and could identify both. One of them was his uncle Zakir Koyal.
“On realising that I have identified them, they decided to hack me to death. But I managed to escape just in time with some injuries,” Abed, now admitted at the Diamond Harbour District Hospital said today.
As the news spread at Gunjirpur of Zakir being involved in the burglary, villagers ganged up and unleashed an attack on his residence today.
They managed to get hold of Zakir and, lynched him on the spot.
A team from Mathurapur police station rushed in on hearing about the incident and, sent the dead body for post-mortem. Police have started a probe to identify those behind the lynching. At the same time, they are investigating as to why Abed had kept Rs 1.86-lakh cash in his house.
