Cooch Behar: Angry people have torched a police highway check-post in Cooch Behar district after two people were killed in an accident.

This has happened earlier this evening on National Highway-31 at Pakurtala under Tufanganj police station jurisdiction.

An Assam-bound lorry, which was passing through Pakurtala, collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction. Two people, including the driver of the auto-rickshaw, died on the spot and, seven were injured.

The accident took place next to a highway police check-post. Alleging that police collect bribe from lorries at the check-post and, an accident takes place frequently at the spot as drivers try to evade the police-bribe, angry people set the check-post to fire soon after the accident.

On learning about this, a fire tender from Tufanganj rushed to the spot but the angry people stopped it from dousing the fire.

It was then that a large posse of police from Tufanganj and the district headquarters Cooch Behar reached the spot and managed to disperse the crowd.

The seven injured in the accident have been admitted to Cooch Behar Medical College. The condition of three of them is stated to be critical.
