Kolkata: If the exit polls are anything to go by, BJP is set to emerge as a major political force in Bengal once the Lok Sabha election results are out on 23 May Thursday.

Most of the exit polls, barring only one exception, are projecting double-digit seats for the BJP in Bengal. Some are even forecasting that BJP will get more seats than the Trinamool.

Reacting to this, Trinamool supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that it is a ploy to manipulate thousands of EVMs through such “gossip.”

“I don’t trust Exit Poll gossip. The game plan is to manipulate or replace thousands of EVMs through this gossip. I appeal to all Opposition parties to be united, strong and bold. We will fight this battle together,” she tweeted as soon as the television channels started flashing the exit poll figures.

The number of Lok Sabha seats in Bengal is 42. In 2014, Trinamool had won 34, Congress 04, Left and BJP 02 each.

This time, while most exit polls are forecasting a jump in the number of seats for the BJP, they differ from each other as regards the exact number of seats that the saffron party may pocket.

ABP Nielsen says that Trinamool will win 24 seats, BJP 16, and Congress 02. Times Now VMR is putting the figure at Trinamool 28, BJP 11, and Congress 02, and Left 01.

India Today-Axis says that Trinamool will get anything from 19-22, BJP 19-23, Congress 0-1.

India Today-Axis is the one which had successfully predicted a clean sweep for the Congress in Chhattisgarh earlier this year when all other exit polls were either giving BJP the advantage or were projecting a close fight.

Republic-Jan ki Baat is projecting that BJP will get 18 to 26 seats, Trinamool 13 to 21, and all others zero. Republic TV is known for its clear pro-BJP stance.

This being the projection by most of the exit polls, News18-Ipsos is the only exception which is saying something entirely contrary. According to them, Trinamool will get 36-38 seats, BJP 3-5, and Congress 0-1.
