Kalyani: A women and her two minor daughters have been charred to death at Tehatta in Nadia district.
The victims have been identified as Sagari Bibi, in her 30’s, Halima Khatun (6), and Sarbina Khatun (4). The incident occurred yesterday night at Tehatta’s Purba Nowdapara locality.
A maternal aunt of the deceased woman said that Sagari’s husband Sahin Dafadar used to physically assault her almost every day on one pretext or the other. Yesterday evening too he assaulted Sagari and then left home.
Later in the night, neighbours saw smoke and flames raging out from the single-storey concrete house where Sagari lived with her husband and two daughters. On rushing to the spot, they found the door bolted from inside and Sagari or her children were not responding to the repeated banging on the door.
This made the neighbours break in through a window only to find Sagari and two daughters lying charred on the bed. They were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
The neighbours are in a fix as to how the fire broke out ~ did someone light the fire to burn the three or Sagari herself set the fire to end her troubled life or it was a case of electrical short-circuit.
Given his history of assaulting wife, police have detained Sagari’s husband. The dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact time of death and other related facts.
