Siliguri: A young man has committed suicide after killing his wife and only child in Alipurduar district in north Bengal.

The shocking incident has taken place today 1 August and the deceased have been identified as Basudev Pal (35), Anima Pal (24) and Ankita Pal (8).

Basudev is a carpenter and used to work in Shillong in Meghalaya. His wife and daughter lived with his mother at their native place at Kumargram in Alipurduar. Basudev came home on a vacation yesterday.

According to other members of the family, until late into the night he quarrelled with wife Anima over some issue.

Today morning when the family members got no response from their room despite repeated knocks, they broke open the door.

It was only to find Basudev hanging from the ceiling, while his wife and daughter lying dead on the bed with gamchas (cotton towels) tied around their neck.

They at once alerted the neighbours, who, in turn, send out a word to the Kumargram police station. Alipurduar superintend of police, Nagendranath Tripathi, arrived himself leading a police team.

The three dead bodies were later sent to Alipurduar District Hospital for post-mortem. Prior to this, a magistrate performed an inquest of the dead bodies in the house.

Neighbours have told police that Basudev used to suspect his wife of having an extramarital affair with someone else. On every vacation when he came home, Basudev used to fight with Anima over this.

Taking this information as a cue, the police suspect that Basudev killed his wife and daughter and then hanged himself.

However, given the sober state in which the body of his wife and daughter were found, he might have had made them drink something intoxicating.

Police are also looking for the immediate trigger that made Basudev take such a drastic step. This is because the dispute over extramarital affair was not new.
