Siliguri, 07 August: POLICE in Siliguri have arrested a citizen of Nepal for allegedly being involved in the 29 July violence by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters at Sukna on the outskirts of the town.
This is for the first time that a Nepal citizen has been arrested by police for being part of the latest bout of Gorkhaland agitation. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been on record saying that foreign countries were fueling the unrest in Darjeeling Hills, although she never named any country directly.
Uday Limbu (39) was arrested by a team from Pradhannagar police station by conducting raid at Salbari near Sukna. He is a resident of Ilam district in eastern Nepal close to Naxalbari area.
Police said that Limbu was part of the GJM mob that fought pitched battle with police all through the day on 29 July and lobbed stones and petrol bombs at the cops injuring two policemen. The mob had vandalised several vehicles as well.
Siliguri police commissioner Neeraj Kumar Sing that the arrested Nepal citizen was being interrogated to find out if men like him have sneaked into Siliguri-Darjeeling areas to take part in the Gorkhaland agitation. He will be produced at Siliguri court tomorrow.
The arrest comes on a day the GJM called indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling Hills completed 55 days.
