Kolkata: Angry people took to the streets and resorted to vandalism and arson after a schoolboy died in a wall collapse at Hatiara in New Town.

The incident took place this morning when Sayan Roy (12) was going to school on a bicycle with younger brother Ayan on the pillion. As they were passing by a storehouse of floor marbles that falls on the way to school, a portion of the wall of the storehouse came crushing on them.

The two brothers got buried under the debris: class VI student Sayan died on the spot and his younger brother Ayan suffered critical injuries. Some eyewitnesses rushed the injured boy to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at Belgachia. His condition is still unstable.

As the news of the death spread in the area, residents came out on the street in large numbers and blocked the road in protest. A section of them forayed into the marble storeroom and carried out massive vandalism. They also torched a car that was parked on the premises. The staff of the storehouse managed to escape the public anger as they fled before the raid.

With the arson and vandalism on, a team from New Town police station rushed to the spot only to face the anger of the people. Police eventually managed to contain the violence by assuring that the owner of the storehouse will be arrested at the earliest.

People of the area said that the wall collapsed because heavy slabs of marble and granites used to be kept leaned on the wall. Residents of the area had cautioned the storehouse owner several times against this but he paid no heed.
