Kolkata: Police in Kolkata arrested as many as 182 revellers for driving in a drunken state on the New Year eve.
That’s not all! Another 85 people were arrested from different parts of the city on varying charges ranging from creating nuisance under the influence of alcohol to picking up a fight with other revellers to consuming narcotics.
The drink driving cases were detected by police through the use of breath analyser. Those arrested have been booked under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Kolkata Police pressed into as many as 100 police pickets in different parts of the city to keep a check on those who indulge in nuisance and uncivil activities in the name of New Year celebrations.
In addition to the pickets, 14 high-flying radio squads and, 13 quick response teams were also pressed in starting from the afternoon 31 December.
The prime focus of the vigil has been on Park Street and New Market area where the revellers crowded the most.
On Tuesday, Kolkata Police revealed that surprise raids were conducted on 30-odd nightclubs located in different corners in the city to find out whether narcotics were being consumed by the merrymakers.
The vigil at Park Street will be maintained through the first week of January.
