Bolpur / Kolkata, 16 January: NINE persons arrested for the vandalism and arson at Mayureswar police station in Birbhum yesterday have been sent to four days police custody.
This on a day, a BJP delegation called on the President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi, seeking his intervention to contain the “growing lawlessness in West Bengal” citing the 03 January attack on Kaliachak police station in Malda, and yesterday’s attack on Mayureswar police station. Bengal BJP president, Dilip Ghosh, was part of the delegation along with several other national level leaders.
Mayureswar police today produced the nine arrested before the Rampurhat Sub-divisional Court, after which the additional chief judicial magistrate, Rajesh Guha Roy, remanded them to police custody. They will be produced in court again on 21 January.
All the nine arrested are residents of Musliampara and Majhipara, the latter being the locality where the police were first attacked after a local mason was run-over by a sand carrying truck.
Alleging that the police regularly extort money from sand carrying trucks and eventually resulting in such accidents, the local mob had set two police vehicles afire. They then attacked the Mayureswar police station located at a distance with lathis and brick / stones, and set the generator room of the police station on fire.
Policemen present at the police station had to flee and take shelter to a nearby building to save themselves from the irate mob. They were rescued only after reinforcement came from the district headquarters Suri.
