Siliguri: Come September, New Jalpaiguri railway station in Siliguri will get two lifts, and by December will get two new escalators.
This is part of an initiative that the Northeast Frontier Railway has taken all over its jurisdiction. As of now, New Jalpaiguri station has only one escalator in its entry building.
According to NF Railway spokesperson, other stations that will be equipped with lifts by September are three at Guwahati, two at Lumding, and one each at New Cooch Behar, Kathiar, and Tinsukia.
The lifts will be installed between the platform and the foot-over-bridge so that aged and physically challenged passengers can commute without difficulty. Each of the lifts will have a capacity to carry 11 passengers and will function round the clock.
This apart, two more escalators will be installed at New Jalpaiguri railway station by December. New Cooch Behar, Katihar, Kishanganj, Rangiya, Kamakhya, Guwahati, Lumding, and New Tinsukia will also get two escalators each.
