Siliguri: A Congress supporter has died in a clash between Trinamool and Congress workers at Chopra in North Dinajpur district over the Panchayat polls.
The victim has been identified as Baisakhu Karmakar (52). Police have detained a Trinamool gram panchayat poll candidate Md Halimuddin and his accomplices for this.
The incident took place around noon today. According to Congress leaders, they got a tip-off this morning that Trinamool was planning to abduct their gram panchayat candidate Jahidul Islam so to compel him to withdraw the poll nomination.
This made the Congress leaders and workers gathered at the party office at Chopra’s Lalbazar. They lodged Islam in the office and stood guarding the office.
Countering this, Trinamool leaders and cadres also assembled in the area in large numbers. Eventually, a clash broke out between the two camps with bullets being fired from improvised rifles and crude bombs being lobbed.
Trinamool cadres vandalised the Congress office and also some shops in the vicinity that are owned by Congress supporters. Congress supporter Baisakhu Karmakar got caught in the skirmish and suffered a cardiac arrest leading to his death on the spot.
Two Trinamool workers suffered injuries from bullets fired by air-guns allegedly by Congress workers. The two have been hospitalised but their injuries are not critical in nature.
With situation seemingly going out of control, police pressed in reinforcement in the area and fired rubber bullets to disperse the warring crowd. The Trinamool candidate and his accomplices were detained after Congress lodged an FIR accusing them of having murdered Karmakar.
