Siliguri: Close on the heels of the hooch tragedy that killed 12 people at Nadia’s Santipur recently, spurious hooch has now claimed two lives in Siliguri sub-division.
Two youths ~ Bablu Karmakar and his friend ~ were found dead today morning in Karmakar’s residence at Madhu Jote under Phansidewa police station jurisdiction. Karmakar was found dead on the bed in his room, his friend was lying dead on the veranda of the hutment.
Karmakar’s family members said that the two consumed hooch till late on Wednesday night ignoring the objection by the family. On getting up in this morning, the family members found the two dead and suspect that this is due to the consumption of hooch.
As the news spread, women from the Adivasi dominated village unleashed an attack on shops in and around that sell hooch. They demolished as many as 11 shops as the owners ran away.
On learning about this, a team from Phansidewa police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The dead bodies of the two youths were sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Police said that the second youth hails from another area and had come over to friend Karmakar’s house for merrymaking.
