Kolkata: AFTER a gap of nearly six years, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today visited the house of artist Suvaprasanna at Salt Lake this evening for a get-together ~ something that was almost a routine until 2011 when Trinamool came to power in Bengal for the first time.

The get-together was attended by at least three state ministers namely Partha Chatterjee, Bratya Basu, Aroop Biswas, poet Subodh Sarkar, filmmaker Arindam Sil, thespian Bibhas Chakraborty, actresses Indrani Halder, June Malia, and others.

Indrani Halder told reporters that the get-together is being hosted by Suvaprasanna as today is his birthday and that, the Chief Minister had also asked her to come over. Sources claimed that Banerjee herself had asked Shuvaprasanna to convene the get-together.

On seeing reporters gathered outside the artist’s Salt Lake BH Block residence, the Chief Minister, however, expressed her displeasure. “What is this? Wouldn’t you allow me to attend even a gettogether in peace?” a visibly angry Banerjee said while asking her security guards to drive away the media persons.

The getting together of the creative personalities and Trinamool politicians comes on a day Banerjee was conferred an honorary D.Litt. by Calcutta University at its annual convocation.

Between 2007 and 2011, such get-together of Trinamool leaders and anti-CPI-M creative personalities at Suvaprasanna’s house was a routine. In fact, programme for the fight against CPI-M on Singur and Nandigram issues used to be finalised in such closed-door events. The number of creative personalities in attendance was higher earlier.

But after Suvaprasanna was quizzed for the first time in 2014 by the ED and CBI over the Saradha Scam, Banerjee started maintaining a distance from him and the artist too kept low for some time. The ice broke again on 21 July when Suvaprasanna was seen in Trinamool’s rally after a two-year gap.

Speculation is rife that Banerjee has resumed the get-together with creative personalities so to chalk out a strategy against the BJP, which is gaining grounds in Bengal and are wooing celebrities.
