Kolkata: POLICE have arrested the owner of a chemical warehouse at Armenian Ghat in Kolkata from which a fire broke out yesterday reducing a slum into ashes.
Ram Singh, the proprietor of Safe Cargo Movers, was arrested today morning on the basis an FIR lodged yesterday at North Port police station.
Safe Cargo Movers had taken the Armenian Ghat premises on Strand Bank Road on lease from Central PSU Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) in April 2009. Despite the lease expiring in March 2010, he continued to forcibly run the chemical warehouse on the premises.
KoPT lodged an FIR with police but the latter sat idle as for most of the private establishments functioning on Strand Bank Road the story is same. They have been operating for ages after overshooting the lease period and many times without necessary licence from Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the fire department.
But after yesterday’s fire gutted nearly 70-shanties at Armenian Ghat slum, police finally swung into action. Arrested Ram Singh was produced in the Bankshall Court in the city today.
