Silchar, 24 May: ONE of the eight BJP MLAs from Barak Valley has found place in the Cabinet of the first BJP government in Assam that has been sworn-in in Guwahati today afternoon.
Fifty six year old Parimal Suklabaidya, who is an MLA from Dholai Assembly constituency in Cachar district, is one of the nine Cabinet ministers who have been sworn-in in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and almost all of the Union Cabinet. Suklabaidya took oath of office in mother tongue Bengali.
This year it is Suklabaidya’s fourth term as BJP MLA from Dholai. He had won the seat first time in 1991, but lost to Congress in 1996. But after this, he was elected MLA from Dholai for two consecutive terms in 2001 and 2006.
Suklabaidya lost to Congress again in 2011, but regained the seat this time by a margin of 26, 837 votes.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is likely to allot the Cabinet portfolios later today or tomorrow and sources said that being a fourth time MLA, Suklabaidya is likely to get a key department.
This apart, Barak Valley is likely to get at least one minister of state when Sonowal expands his newly sworn-in Cabinet over the next few weeks. Aminul Haque Laskar, the only Muslim to get elected on BJP ticket from the Sonai Assembly segment in Assam is likely to be inducted as a minister of state.
