Kolkata: Those planning a visit to the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata this Sunday better take note of this piece of news.
Belvedere Road in Alipore, which serves as the main approach to the Zoo, will remain shut to vehicles for three days from midnight today (26 May) for the construction of a foot-bridge.
The footbridge is to connect Alipore Zoo and the National Library over Belvedere Road and will benefit visitors who often find it difficult to cross the busy road. Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is constructing the bridge at a cost of Rs 4-crore with aid from the state government.
Its main iron structure has been already pre-fabricated at a facility at Dankuni in Hooghly and the installation will be carried out over the next three days. To facilitate the work, Kolkata Police today stated that Belvedere Road will be shut for vehicles till 6 pm Monday (28 May).
According to police, no vehicles from AJC Bose Road end and National Library end will be allowed to enter Belvedere Road barring the vehicles in use by Alipore Zoo and Taj Bengal Hotel.
As an alternative, vehicles will be able to enter Alipore from Hasting Xing via Diamond Harbour Road. Buses will be diverted along Judges Court Road-Hazra from Mominpur Xing. The restrictions mean that visitors to the Zoo or National Library shall have to walk a little after getting down from bus or taxi.
After the installation of the iron structure over the next three days, it will take a few more months for the footbridge to get ready. This is because escalators will be installed at both ends of the bridge and so will be a glass roof over the entire structure.
