Bolpur / Kolkata: AFTER the death of a BJP leader in Bankura yesterday in alleged Trinamool attack, now a CPI-M worker is battling for life after being hit with a crude bomb in Birbhum district in the run-up to the Panchayat elections in May.
Not only this! The former Bolpur MP of CPI-M, Ram Chandra Dome, has also been injured in the attack allegedly carried out by Trinamool cadres. He has suffered injuries to the head and is being treated at Nalhati Primary Health Centre.
Trouble began this morning at Birbhum’s Nalhati-I block when defying Trinamool’s muscle flexing, CPI-M and Congress workers jointly went out rallying to the BDO office to file nomination papers for the Panchayat polls. Dome was at the forefront of the rally wherein the cadres were equipped with lathis to resist attack by Trinamool.
As soon as the rally reached the Nalhati-I BDO office, miscreants allegedly engaged by Trinamool launched an attack. Initially, the attack was carried out with lathis but witnessing some resistance, the miscreants soon started lobbing crude bombs on the Congress-CPI-M workers.
Dome was injured in the head after being hit with a lathi and so were several other Congress-CPI-M workers. A CPI-M worker named Hiru Let was hit by a crude bomb, leaving him critically injured.
A section of the CPI-M cadres rushed Let to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Others led by injured Dome, who was bleeding profusely from the head, stepped into the BDO’s chamber and helped his party cadres file nomination papers.
Dome was later taken to the Nalhati Primary Health Centre for treatment. Learning about the attack on Dome, Let, and other party cadres, CPI-M state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra has called for an all-out protest and resistance across Bengal.
Similar attacks by Trinamool on opposition party workers have been reported from Murarai-I BDO office in Birbhum, and Katwa, Mangalkote, Galsi, Aushgram, etc. in East Burdwan.
A prospective BJP candidate Ziar Ali has gone missing from Parui in Birbhum hours before he was to file nomination papers today. BJP has accused Trinamool of having abducted him and has lodged an FIR for this.
Reacting to the violence at Nalhati today, Trinamool leader and state education minister Partha Chatterjee has questioned why Congress-CPI-M cadres were carrying lathis in the rally. “They are trying to foment trouble and disrupt the elections,” he said in Kolkata.
