Kolkata: A man in his mid-40’s, who had introduced himself as a photojournalist, has been found dead in his rented house at Dum Dum in Kolkata.

Somnath Sarkar (45)’s decomposed body was retrieved by police last night from the ground floor rented house at 805 R N Tagore Road at Dum Dum’s Bediapara.

The body was found on the floor with face up and a deep injury to the back of the head. All the windows and doors to the room were bolted from inside. Sarkar used to live alone in the room.

The landlord has told police that Sarkar took the room on rent about 8-9 months ago by introducing himself as a photojournalist. He used to go out around 7 am every day and return late in the evening. Because of this, his interaction with the neighbours was limited.

Nobody saw Sarkar venture out in the past 4-5-days and last night the neighbours got a stench emanating out from the closed room. They alerted police, who broke into the room throw a window and found Sarkar dead.

The landlord has claimed that despite repeatedly being asked, Sarkar never gave a copy of his voter ID card or Aadhar as proof of his identity. The landlord is also unaware to which media house he was attached to although Sarkar had introduced himself as a photojournalist.

A preliminary probe by police has revealed that until a decade ago, Sarkar used to live with his parents in an owned flat at Mondal Para Lane near 30A Bus Stand at Dum Dum. After his parents died, he sold the flat and started living on rent in different parts of Dum Dum.

Police are yet to establish whether he was actually a photojournalist or was doing something else for livelihood.
