Bolpur: Visva-Bharati authority got a public rapping from its Chancellor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the mismanagement at the convocation at Santiniketan today.

This he did by begging a public apology from the dais of the convocation with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, West Bengal Governor KN Tripathi, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Visva-Bharati acting vice-chancellor Sabujkali Sen seated there.

“As I was reaching the dais, some students signaled to me that not even drinking water has been made available to them. Being the Chancellor of Visva-Bharati I take full responsibility for all the inconveniences caused to you all and seek an apology for this,” the PM said.

“I keep on going to events in several universities as a guest. But here I am a host. I am the Chancellor because of the democratic practice of our country.”

Earlier in the morning, PM Modi landed at Panagarh Airbase in West Burdwan by a special aircraft. Asansol BJP MP Union minister Babul Supriyo and Governor KN Tripathi received him at Panagarh.

After this, the PM took an Air Force chopper to reach a makeshift helipad on Mela Ground at Santiniketan. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received the PM there and greeted him with uttariya (scarf) and a bouquet of flowers.

Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh, national secretary Rahul Sinha, senior leader Mukul Roy, and state BJP women wing president Locket Chatterjee also welcomed the PM at the helipad.

After this, adhering to Visva-Bharati convention, PM Modi reached Rabindra Bhavana and he was welcomed there by the acting vice-chancellor.

Urban development minister Firhad Hakim received Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Kolkata airport. After this, Sheikh Hasina took a helicopter reaching Santiniketan. She straightway joined PM Modi at Rabindra Bhavana.

The two Prime Ministers then walked to Amra Kunja at Santiniketan where the convocation is being held. Later today, they are scheduled to inaugurate Bangladesh Bhavana built at Santiniketan with aid from Bangladesh.
