Siliguri: As many as 17 police personnel, including an additional superintendent of police and, four common men, have been injured in an attack by BJP cadres at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district.
The injured additional SP (rural) of Jalpaiguri, Thendup Sherpa, is now admitted to a private nursing home in Siliguri. Some of the other injured are admitted at Dhupguri Hospital, while a few have been discharged on first-aid.
The attack took place today morning. In a bid to prevent any untoward incident at BJP’s Cooch Behar rath yatra which was barred by Calcutta High Court yesterday, police in several adjoining districts were stopping vehicles carrying BJP workers to Cooch Behar.
Similarly, a bus carrying BJP workers was stopped by police at Dhupguri’s Jorapani area. Peeved at this, BJP workers got down and resorted to an agitation right on the road.
A police team was approaching the spot to disperse the agitators that the BJP cadres started hurling brickbats at the police. A brickbat hit additional SP Sherpa on the right eye.
Taken aback by the sudden shower of brickbats, a sub-inspector jumped onto an NBSTC passenger bus so to evade the attack. This made the BJP cadres to start hurling brickbats at the bus, leaving its conductor Sagar Mondal and three passengers injured.
Other policemen, who were trying to disperse the violent BJP workers, were also injured by brickbats. They include Dhupguri traffic in-charge Ashim Majumdar and sub-inspector Sunil Barman. In all 17 policemen were injured.
Reinforcements from nearby police stations rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. They rescued the injured policemen and civilians and took them to Dhupguri Hospital.
Additional SP Sherpa was later relocated to Siliguri as the injury in his eye is critical in nature and may require a surgery.
