Kolkata: A city court has sent the two accused to police custody for the alleged rape of a girl in the Kolkata office of an international NGO on Sunday, 8 July.
Rajiv Biswas, a senior staff at NGO Operation Rescue, and his accomplice Baisakhi Karan Biswas, who works for another NGO, were arrested yesterday on the basis of an FIR lodged by the victim girl at Bowbazar police station.
Biswas, a native of Keshpur in West Midnapore, is accused of raping the girl with the help of Baisakhi, who hails from Haridevpur off Tollygunge in the city. The duo was produced at the Bankshall court in the city today and the judge remanded them to police custody till 18 July.
The victim girl, who is a teacher in an NGO run school, has told police that she got introduced to Baisakhi at a city church a few months ago and then developed a friendship through social networking sites. They then started going out in the city on weekends.
On 8 July, the two of them had lunch at an upscale restaurant. After this, Baisakhi requested her to accompany to a relative’s residence. This is how the victim landed up in the third-floor office of NGO Operation Rescue at 9E Nirmal Chandra Street in north Kolkata.
There Rajiv Biswas allegedly pestered her to have alcohol and then raped her, the victim has alleged. Baisakhi, who has been separated from her husband, allegedly helped Rajiv in overpowering the victim.
