Bolpur, 29 September: POLICE on Tuesday arrested five persons in connection with the bullet deaths of three youths by ambulance-borne assailants at Bahiri in Birbhum on Monday but the main accused, Trinamool leader Kajal Seikh, is still free.
The five arrested have been identified as Seikh Nidarul, Seikh Hakim, Seikh Idbaksh, Rafikul and Nafez Khan. The first four are residents of Pakuri village in Nanoor; the last one is a resident of Boro Shimulia near Bolpur.
They were arrested in the wee hours on Tuesday after the father of the one of the murdered youths late on Monday lodged an FIR against 22 individuals including Kajal Seikh. But the five arrested were not among the 22 named in the FIR.
The five were produced before the Bolpur additional chief judicial magistrate court and the magistrate sent them to four days police remand though the cops had prayed for seven day custody.
Miscreants travelling in an ambulance had showered bullets on a scooter at Bahiri in Birbhum on Monday afternoon, killing three youths on the spot.
The deceased’s family claimed the youths were Trinamul Congress workers and that the killings were the result of a factional feud between groups led by Trinamool Nanoor MLA Gadadhar Hazra and Nanoor party leader Kajal Seikh.
Their lifeless bodies were found at Nimtala More on Bahiri-Bolpur Road beside a partially damaged scooter and the ambulance that Hazra had donated from his MLA fund to the Charkol gram panchayat.
The ambulance had hit a roadside tree before coming to halt and the assailants had escaped by lorry before local people could reach the spot.
