Siliguri, 17 September: THE police in Siliguri Thursday arrested three persons for the murder of three-members of a family at Shivmandir in Matigara near North Bengal University on 14 September.
Of the three arrested men, two are from Matigara and one is from Malbazar in the Dooars. Aged between 25-30 years, they have been identified as ~ Dipu, Sahadeb and Chiranjit. They are carpenters by profession.
Police have found on them some of the gold ornaments and Rs 13,000 in cash that they had burgled from the house at Leninpur in Shivmandir after murdering Pradip Bardhan (61), his wife Dipti (52) and son Prasenjit (27) by strangulation.
Bardhan, who worked with the state-owned power company, had retired from service about a year ago. His son Prasenjit worked as a contractual employee with the state public works department in Siliguri. Dipti was a homemaker.
Additional commissioner of police, Siliguri west, Shyam Singh said that the accused trio had done some carpentry at the Bardhan household in the past. They went to the house again in the evening of 14 September after being called by Bardhan to fix a window.
“It was during then that they strangled the three family members using ropes and bed sheet with the motive of robbing valuables from the house. After the murder, they took out all gold ornaments and cash from different places in the bi-storyed house and escaped in the dead of night,” the police officer said.
The dead bodies of the three family members were recovered by the police on 15 August morning after neighbours alerted the cops that there was no response from the inmates of the house.
The elderly man Pradip Bardhan’s body was daubed with fresh paints and a coir rope tied around his neck.
His wife, Dipti’s body was found with a nylon rope on her body and the corpse of their son Prasenjit was found with a bed-sheet tied around his neck.
The arrested trio will be produced in the Siliguri court on Friday.
