Bankura: An officer of the West Bengal police has shot himself dead in a police station while on duty.
This has happened at Saltora police station in Bankura district last night and the deceased has been identified as sub-inspector Biswanath Mondal (47). He was a native of Gangajal Ghati in the same district.
Mondal was on duty at the police station from 8 am yesterday and was to continue till 8 am today. However, around 11 pm last night policemen living in the barrack adjacent to the police station heard a gunshot from the police station building.
They rushed in to find Mondal lying in a pool of blood on the floor. There was a bullet injury mark just below his ear and his pistol was lying nearby.
Colleagues at once took the sub-inspector to Saltora Primary Health Centre, where doctor declared him dead on arrival. His body has since been sent for post-mortem.
Modal was promoted to the rank of sub-inspector about two years ago and after this, his first posting was at Saltora. Although nothing concrete has come to light as regards the probable suicide, Mondal’s colleagues suspect that he did so due a feud in his family.
