Howrah: THE officer-in-charge (O-C) of Shyampur police station is battling for life in a hospital bed on being attacked at Bargram near Garchumuk in Howrah.
O-C Suman Das has been kept on ventilator support in the critical care unit of a private nursing home in Kolkata. The medical team comprising 9 doctors, attending on him, said that if his condition improves, they will perform a surgery on his head tomorrow.
Das, assistant sub-inspector Tarun Purkait, and five of their colleagues were attacked by a group of 20-25 people at Bargram last night where police had gone to contain violence between two families over the ownership of a plot of land.
The police team was attacked as they were returning after arresting some of those engaged in the violence. Accusing the police of playing a partisan role in favour of one family, members of the other family attacked them with lathis and sharp weapons.
O-C Das suffered critical injuries in the head and ASI Purkait suffered injuries in his body. Five other policemen also suffered injuries. All of them were rushed to the Uluberia Sub-divisional Hospital.
Later in the night, Das was relocated to a private nursing home in Kolkata as he had lost consciousness due to the head injury. Police have so far arrested seven persons for the attack and a temporary police picket has been posted at Bargram to avert further violence.
