Kolkata: The election administration in the state has taken suo-motu cognisance of a lewd photograph of film actress and Trinamool Lok Sabha polls candidate Nusrat Jahan being circulated in social media.

Sanjay Basu, the deputy chief electoral officer of West Bengal, today told news persons that the photograph has come to the notice of the Media Monitoring Cell that has been set up under the instruction of the Election Commission of India (EC).

“We are strictly monitoring both the traditional and social media platforms. Even if we don’t get specific complaints, we shall take suo motu action based on the findings of the Media Monitoring Cell,” Basu said.

Adding on the issue, sources said that the election administration will take two-pronged strategy in such cases.

First, ask the concerned social media platform to remove objectionable post. Second, identify with their help the person who posted and those who are sharing such a post.

Such persons will then be prosecuted under the Information Technology Act and other relevant laws.

Ever since Trinamool named film actress Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty (Jadavpur) as Lok Sabha candidates, the two are being trolled on social media. In certain cases, this is leading to their character assassination.

EC Visit

Sudeep Jain, Deputy Election Commissioner in charge of West Bengal, will be visiting Kolkata on 16 March to take stock of election preparedness.

He will hold meetings with district magistrates, superintendents of police, and other senior administrative officials.
