Kolkata: There is no let-up in violence in the Bengal districts despite the Panchayat poll ending yesterday.
Post-poll violence has so far claimed 12 lives while attack and counter-attack on houses of political workers are on.
With the 12 new deaths reported since yesterday evening, the number of people who have died since the start of the Panchayat poll in Bengal at 7 am yesterday has reached 24. As many as 12 deaths were reported during the voting yesterday.
Of the deaths reported today, nine were from the Trinamool, two were from the BJP, and one was a rebel-Trinamool.
THE NEW DEATHS:
Trinamool worker Ujjal Shur was beaten to death by people at Habra in North 24-Parganas yesterday afternoon. His companion Sushil Das (45) was grievously injured; he died at the Barasat District Hospital today. They were returning home after alleging rigging votes at a polling booth when people nabbed them.
At Joynagar in South 24-Parganas, Trinamool worker Sabir Ali Sheikh was found dead today morning. SUCI-CPM workers had allegedly abducted Sabir while he was intimidating voters yesterday.
Khokhan Baidya (38) follower of an Independent candidate at Dadpur Mandirbazar in South 24-Parganas was found dead last night in the courtyard of local Trinamool leader Azad Ali Gayen.
The husband of a Trinamool candidate and outgoing Trinamool gram panchayat member Pranab Biswas was hacked to death in his house today noon at Duttapulia in Nadia district. A gang of BJP miscreants allegedly forayed into his house and killed him.
At Betai in Tehatta again in Nadia district, Krishanagopal Sarkar of BJP was beaten to death yesterday afternoon. Trinamool cadres are accused in the case.
At Bhupatinagar in East Midnapore district, two Trinamool supporters named Bakul Barik and Jhota Maikap died last night while making crude bombs.
At Naoda in Murshidabad, Sahin Sheikh (25) of Trinamool was shot dead yesterday afternoon by suspected Congress workers.
At Tapan in South Dinajpur district, Trinamool worker Mahuruddin Mondal died of a crude bomb blast yesterday evening.
At Udaipur in Raiganj in North Dinajpur district a BJP supporter elderly voter Gaur Sarkar was found dead today at noon. He had gone out for routine morning walk today. Sarkar’s family members have alleged that he was warned by local Trinamool cadres not to go to cast vote yesterday but he head deified the diktat.
Jinnadul Haque (37), a Trinamool worker from Sitai in Cooch Behar passed away at a nursing home in Siliguri today. He was injured yesterday due to an alleged factional fight between two camps of the Trinamool.
