Siliguri: The presiding officer of a Panchayat poll booth in North Dinjapur district has been missing since the polling ended on Monday.
The missing presiding officer, Rajkumar Roy, was a teacher of Rahatpur High Madrasah at Domohona under Karandighi police station area. He was deployed for election duty at a polling booth at Sonapur FP School in Itahar block.
According to the polling officials who were deployed under him at the booth, Roy had gone out to relieve himself around 8 pm on Monday when voting materials were being winded up at the end of voting. His did not return to the booth even as hours passed by.
Roy’s family members have said that he called up them on Monday evening and told that it will be midnight for him to return home after submitting the ballot box at the distribution-cum-receiving centre at Itahar.
But with Roy not making it to his home even after midnight and his mobile phone being switched off, the worried family members turned up at the Itahar block office in the wee hours today. This made the Itahar BDO lodge a missing diary for Roy with the police today morning.
Meanwhile, the mutilated dead body of a man of Roy’s age was found by the railway line at Sonadangi area in Raiganj today evening. A neighbour of Roy, who went to have a glance of the dead body, claimed that it is that of the missing presiding officer. Police and Roy’s family members are, however, yet to verify the claim.
