Siliguri: THE police authorities have ordered a departmental probe against the inspector-in-charge (IC) of Darjeeling police station for allegedly threatening to rape the mother and sister of a Bimal Gurung loyalist in the Hills.
Soumyajit Roy, the IC of Darjeeling, had allegedly dialled Achutam Bhattarai a few days ago and threatened burning down his house and raping his mother and sister if he did not fall in line.
Roshan Giri, the general secretary of the Gurung faction of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), sent an audio clip of this conversation to media persons in the Hills via WhatsApp. Someone from Gorubathan in Kalimpong also posted the clip on Facebook. The news has left a vast section of the people in Darjeeling very angry.
Darjeeling superintendent of police Akhilesh Chaturvedi today told a news conference that in view of the allegations against the IC, an investigation has been instituted on the matter and both legal and departmental action will be initiated against the inspector if found guilty.
“The probe will be conducted by SP (operations) Amarnath K. In the meantime, we have posted security guards at the house of the complainant lady to ensure that someone else does not carry out a mischief,” Chaturvedi said.
The probe order comes in the wake of a written complaint filed by Achutam’s mother Shakuntala Devi to the DSP Darjeeling yesterday. Darjeeling MP an Union minister SS Ahluwalia had also written to the Union home minister seeking an NIA probe into the matter.
