Howrah, 13 September: PARTIALLY burned body of the wife of a professor at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur in Howrah was recovered from the institute’s residential quarter Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Rupa Maitra (53). Her husband Debashis Maitra is a teacher of civil engineering at IIEST and is also the hostel super of the Macdonald’s Hall at the institute.
Campus sources said that Maitra has been on a tour of Darjeeling and his wife Rupa was alone in the quarter.
On reporting to work Sunday morning, their maid got worried as Rupa did not open the door despite repeated knocks and a foul burnt smell was emitting out from the quarter.
Following this, the maid alerted those living in the neighbouring quarters and they in turn called up the Shibpur police station.
The cops broke open the door only to find the partially burned dead body of the professor’s wife. Neighbours told the police that of late, the deceased woman was suffering from mental ailments. The body was sent for autopsy.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and prima facie believe it to be a case of suicide. Police have sent a word to the professor in Darjeeling asking him come down at the earliest.
