Kolkata / Midnapore: The SP of Purulia, Joy Biswas, has been transferred with immediate effect following the deaths of two BJP workers at Balarampur in the district within four days.

On 30 May, BJP worker Trilochan Mahato was found hanging in a forested area at Balarampur’s Supurdi village and a poster was found next to his dead body that read that he has been punished because he joined BJP at the age of 18 years only.

In the latest case, another BJP worker, Dulal Kumar (32), was found hanging at Dava village again under Balarampur police station area today morning.

Kumar had gone missing last night when he came to deliver dinner to his father who slept at their shop in the village. Today morning villagers found him hanging from a high-voltage electric pole on the outskirts of the village. Kumar was in jeans and t-shirt and had a saffron scarf tied around his waist.

Following the discovery of his dead body, the villages burst into anger. They stopped police when the latter came to send the body for post-mortem. Angry villagers threw stones and brickbats at the police. The cops had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the violent crowd.

On learning about the death of another party worker in Purulia, BJP all India president Amit Shah voiced his protest in a tweet.

“Distressed to know about yet another killing of BJP karyakarta Dulal Kumar in Balrampur, West Bengal. This continued brutality and violence in the land of West Bengal is shameful and inhuman. Mamata Banerjee’s govt has completely failed to maintain law and order in the state,” the tweet reads.

Trinamool spokesperson Derek O’Brien reacted sharply to this. “We strongly condemn this despicable killing. All angles must be probed.  The perpetrators of this heinous act must be punished. What role did Jharkhand border have to play? What elements of Bajrang Dal, Maoist or BJP involved. Let the truth be found out through proper investigation,” he tweeted.

Soon after this, the Purulia SP, Joy Biswas, addressed a news conference wherein he claimed that preliminary investigation suggests the BJP worker has committed suicide. Biswas said this despite the fact that the post-mortem report was yet to come and the exact cause of the death was yet to be ascertained.

Taking exception to the SP’s statement which triggered a furore, the state home department ordered his transfer in the afternoon. In his place, Akash Magharia, now posted in the CID, will take over as the new SP of Purulia. The state government has also ordered a CID probe into the two deaths.

Meanwhile, BJP workers took out a protest rally in Kolkata today against the deaths of the two party workers in Purulia.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said the two deaths are outright murders by Trinamool miscreants as because BJP got more seats in Purulia in the recently concluded Panchayat elections. Ghosh has also termed the CID investigation order nothing but eyewash.

The saffron party has called a 12-hour ban in Purulia tomorrow demanding a CBI probe into the mysterious deaths of the two workers.
