Barasat: A mother, out to see off her daughter to the school bus, has been knocked dead by a reckless bus at Chiriamore at Barrackpore in North 24-Parganas.
The accident took place around 7 this morning and the victim has been identified as Neetu Gupta (42). She was a homemaker.
According to her daughter who studies in class IV at Barrackpore’s St Augustine’s Day School, they were crossing the road at Chiriamore to reach the bus stop when the accident happened.
“The bus was halting on the road and thus taking me along my mother set out to cross the road. But the bus started all of a sudden and ran over my mother. I escaped narrowly,” the little child said.
After knocking down the woman, the bus driver and conductor fled abandoning the private bus, which plies on route 81. An injured Gupta was rushed to BN Bose Hospital at Barrackpore by people living near the accident spot. She was declared dead on arrival by a doctor.
Eyewitnesses said that the killer bus was trying to speed away so that it can move ahead another bus that was following it and ended up killing the homemaker. Titagarh police station later towed away from the killer bus and launched a manhunt for the driver.
