Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee today carried out a major reshuffle in her Cabinet by clipping the wings of two heavyweight ministers and rewarding two low-profile ministers with additional departments.
The move comes a day after three ministers ~ James Kujur, Churamoni Mahato, and Abani Mohan Joardar were made to resign.
In the reshuffle that followed today, senior minister Subrata Mukherjee has been relieved of the public health engineering (PHE) department and he now remains the minister for Panchayat department alone.
Likewise, the environment department has been taken away from Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and he will now only handle fire services department.
Sources in Trinamool suggested that this is only a warning to Mukherjee and Chatterjee and the two could even lose ministership altogether in the future if they do not mend ways. Mukherjee is accused of not actively participating in Trinamool’s political activities; Chatterjee has run into a rough weather over his divorce suit and his controversial relationship with college teacher Baisakhi Banerjee.
PHE department taken away from Mukherjee has been assigned to Malay Ghatak, who is already handling important departments like law and labour. Environment department has been assigned to transport minister Subhendu Adhikari, a young face in the Cabinet.
Other than this, Rajib Banerjee has been moved out from irrigation department and has been made the minister for backward classes welfare department that was vacated by Churamoni Mahato yesterday. Irrigation department will now be looked after by Soumen Mahapatra, who is already the minister for water resources investigation & development.
The Chief Minister has herself retained the tribal development department vacated by James Kujur.
