Kolkata, 13 September: A bi-storied residential building has collapsed at Pathuriaghata under Jorabagan police station area in north Kolkata. The house collapsed around 08.30 this evening.
Local Trinamool councillor Ellora Saha (Ward 24) said that around 100 people lived in the dilapidated building as tenants and one of them has been untraceable ever since the building caved in. It is feared that the person has got trapped under the debris.
Teams of state disaster management force, fire brigade, and Kolkata Police have launched a rescue drive to look for survivors. Debris is being removed using pay-loaders and police have suspended traffic movement on Pathuriaghata Street for this.
Councillor Saha said that after it rained in the area this afternoon, the tenants of the building noticed that plasters were coming lose. Following this some of the tenants went to her house with the request that the building should be declared abandoned and Kolkata Municipal Corporation should compel the owner to rebuild it.
“After this, I came along with them to have a look at the building. Just as we arrived in front of the building, its frontal part collapsed right in front of our eyes. I soon alerted the police and the Mayor,” Saha said.
Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee has reached the site to take stock of the rescue operation. “Work is on in war footing to remove the debris and we pray that nobody is trapped inside,” he said.
