Asansol: COMMON people have shut down a toll plaza on National Highway 2 at Durgapur in West Burdwan district holding it responsible for frequent accidents.
The toll plaza is located at Durgapur’s Banskopa area and is run by a private concessionaire on behalf of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
This happened on Wednesday morning after three girls cycling their way to school were hit by a bus near the toll plaza. They were admitted to nearby Gouri Devi Hospital.
Soon after the accident, residents of the area apprehended the private bus even as its crew fled. They then shut down the toll plaza saying that it has been causing traffic snarl in the entire Rajbandh area and in turn leading to frequent accidents.
They said that while upgrading NH-2 into a six-lane road, NHAI had assured that they will build a footbridge at Rajbandh for the residents to cross the road. But the assurance has remained confined to government files, while people of the area are risking their lives every day.
The people of Rajbandh have made it clear that they will not allow the toll plaza to function until and unless NHAI builds the footbridge.
