Kolkata: Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has sealed a popular restaurant located near Salt Lake City Centre due to alleged unhygienic condition and violating trade licence norms.
The move comes in the wake of recent meat scam in Kolkata meat obtained from carcasses of animals from the dump yards were being supplied to restaurants and hotels in the city by a well-organised racket.
The health department team of the corporation led by secretary Pranay Roy and accompanied by Member, Mayor-in-Council and local councillors went on a surprise to the Balle Balle Dhaba today.
During the visit, the team allegedly found smelly meat in the freezer and discovered that cooking was underway in the backroom kitchen in very unhygienic condition. Soon after this, the restaurant was sealed by the civic body officials.
Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation health department secretary Pranay Roy said that apart from being unhygienic, the restaurant was functioning without a licence from the civic body.
“It was functioning with a trade licence issued by Kolkata Municipal Corporation and that too the licence is for “hospitality services” that pertains to lodging facility. They could not produce any document issued by Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation,” Roy said.
He added that the restaurant has been closed down temporarily and will be allowed to resume business if they procure the required licence and ensure hygiene.
