Kolkata, 23 January: FORMER West Bengal sports minister, Madan Mitra, now lodged in jail for alleged involvement in the multi-crore Saradha Scam, will contest the coming Assembly polls on Trinamool Congress ticket.
The announcement today came from senior Trinamool Congress leader and Dum Dum Lok Sabha MP, Saugata Roy. Kamarhati Assembly segment in North 24-Parganas district, from where Mitra had won the polls in 2011, falls under the Dum Dum Lok Sabha area.
“Let me announce this before you today that Madan Mitra will contest the Assembly polls from Kamarhati. This is the decision of the party. All of us have to work hard to make him win,” Roy told a workshop of Trinamool workers at Deshapriya Nagar in Kamarhati this afternoon.
“It doesn’t matter if Madan is (physically) beside us or not. I have contested many polls, and know that it is the party workers who take a candidate’s message to the people and the electors make him or her win. If you all stay firmly behind him, Madan will surely get elected,” Roy added.
On 14 January, while being produced at the Alipore court in Kolkata, jailed Mitra had indicated to reporters that he was inclined to contest the Assembly polls from his seat. “Party’s decision is my decision. Let the party decide whatever it thinks best, I shall comply with that,” he had told when asked about the chances of him getting into the poll fray from jail.
Mitra had clearly ruled out that neither his sons nor anyone else from his family would contest in lieu of him, and thus, leaving with little choice before the Trinamool Congress.
The Opposition CPI-M, Congress, BJP said that Trinamool was giving ticket to Mitra to keep him good humour so that he does not open up to the CBI about the involvement of other leaders of the party in the Saradha Scam. Mitra is in jail custody since being arrested by the CBI on 12 December 2014.
